Creating a new code

You can create new codes and manage already existing codes on the Codebook screen, which you can get to by clicking on Codebook the in the menu on the left side of the screen. There are two tabs there: Codes and Categories.

In the Codes tab, you can manage codes. At the top of the screen, there are six buttons. To create a new code, use the plus sign + button. A dialogue window pops up where you have to fill in the name of the new code and select its colour. You can add a description of the code.

When the code is created you will see it on the main screen in your Codebook. Tapping the + icon on the code bar will show the code description.

Lastly, you can export or import your codebook using the Export and Import buttons on the left. Clicking on the export button will allow you to download your codebook in CSV format. Simply click on the export icon and then select 'Export CSV'.

Note: When opening your freshly downloaded codebook in MS Excel, first go to the Data tab and select the 'From CSV' option. This will display the data in a readable format.

Adding quick tags

On the right side of the screen above the Remove Code button you will see two arrows, click on them to display the Quick Tag option.

First, name your quick tag and write it down in the code name box. Then, highlight the text that you want to tag. Finally, click on the Quick Tag button to execute the action. Your quick tag will be yellow by default. To modify your new code, go back to the codebook screen where it should appear automatically. Edit the code according to your needs. The editing process is explained in the 'Editing codes' section.

In the drop down menu you can also choose whether you want to display your codes in a column format. To do that click on the table icon above the code name box

You can change the marking style (highlights, underline, or no marking) by clicking on the highlighter icon next to the table icon.

Merging codes

Merging codes can be used if there are two codes that overlap, for example mother and father, and you want to merge them into a new code parent. First, create a new code called parent. Second, click on the merge icon at the top of the screen.

image1

In the Merge codes dialogue window, select the code that you want to merge from and the code you want to merge into. Hit Merge to execute the operation.

image17

Repeat the same steps to merge the second code. This creates a single code that contains all segments previously coded with mother and father. After merging, you cannot view the original codes or return to them individually. To keep the original codes next to the new common code, create a category instead of merging the codes.

Deleting a code

You can delete codes with the minus button - on the top of the Codes tab. Select the desired code from the drop down menu and click delete. The code will be deleted from your Codebook. When deleting a code, be careful - once a code is deleted, there is no way to recover it.
