A native text editor for the ZX Spectrum Next.
The editor is a DOT command, the recommended installation method is to copy the ZED binary file to the DOT folder located in the root of your Next OS SD card.
The latest binary can be downloaded from itch.io
Once installed you can launch the editor in one of two ways.
Starts a new document and prompt for a file name when you either save or exit and choose to save the file.
.zedIf the specified file exists, it will be loaded into the editor. Otherwise, a new document will be created with the filename prefilled.
.zed readme.txtTo open a file with the cursor positioned at a specific line and column, use the + prefix when specifying the location.
For example, to start the editor on line 16, run:
.zed +16 readme.txtYou can also specify a column within the line:
.zed +16,7 readme.txtAfter launching, you can immediately start editing. Use the cursor/arrow keys for navigation as expected.

- Note: Due to the way the keyboard works, you can also press
EXTEND MODEand the arrow keys to achieve the above actions.
The editor allows text selection for cutting or copying.
- Press
EXTEND MODE+M(↑M) to set a marker/anchor. - Move the cursor to select text between the marker and the cursor position.
- To clear the marker, press the
↑Mkey combination again.
- Once text is selected, press
↑Cto copy it to the buffer. - Navigate to a new location and press
↑Vto paste.
- Press
↑Xto cut (copy to buffer and remove from the document). - Navigate to a new location and press
↑Vto paste.
- Press
↑Kto cut the current line (copy to buffer and remove from the document). - Navigate to a new location and press
↑Vto paste.
NOTE: The copy buffer is limited to 8K. The start/anchor will adjust automatically to prevent exceeding this limit.

When in codepoint input mode, indicated by the caret changing to a different pattern, you can enter characters by their hexadecimal codepoints.
- Press
↑0to enter codepoint input mode. - Type two hexadecimal digits (0-9, A-F) to specify the character codepoint.
- The character will be inserted at the cursor position.
- Press
ESCto exit codepoint input mode without inserting a character.
The editor settings are stored in a configuration file named zed.cfg located in C:/SYS/ directory on your Next OS SD card.
You can edit this file directly to change settings such as caret blink rate, key repeat delay, and beep sound, color scheme etc.
All available settings:

key_beep_cycles=<number> # Keyboard beep sound (0-off) (default 0x00)
key_beep_period=<number> # Keyboard beep half period per cycle (1-65535) (default 0x8c)
font=<filename> ; Font file to load (Default is built-in font)
Colors are 3-3-2 bit RGB format All numbers can be entered as decimal values, hex values (0x00-0xFF) or binary values (0b00000000-0b11111111). Any setting not specified in the config file will use the default value.
