Mod Issues

Crashing when game launched

  1. Confirm you are on the correct HOI4 version for the mod.
  2. Confirm you have no conflicting mods.
  3. If you're using the development version, note that it's an alpha, meaning it may occasionally be in a broken state.
  4. If it is still crashing check the Discord for help.

My game says it is out of date

  1. HOI4 features both major and minor updates. Major updates are represented by the second set of numbers in the version (e.g., 16 in 1.16.0). These updates typically break the mod, so you'll need to wait for the mod to be updated before you can play on that version. In the meantime, you can roll back to an older version of HOI4 to continue playing the mod.
  2. Minor updates are indicated by the third set of numbers (e.g., 0 in 1.16.0). These updates rarely break the mod, so you can continue playing even if the launcher warns you about version incompatibility.

Why are main menu buttons are cut off, or the date covered up in the game by GDP statistics?

  1. Go to options
  2. Video settings
  3. Reduce UI scaling to 0.9
  4. If interface elements are still obstructed/covered, further reduce the UI scaling.

I heard an update released, but why is my steam copy of the mod not updating?

  1. Unsubscribe and resubscribe to the mod
  2. If this did not work, clear game cache and delete the mod folder in \Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV\mod
  3. Repeat step 1

Why is all text replaced by question marks?

This is caused by running the game in a language that uses a different writing system than the Latin script, e.g. Russian (Cyrillic). CWIC only supports English, however there are fan-made translations for the mod available on Steam (No longer being updated).

Installation Issues

Mod not appearing in launcher

If the mod doesn’t appear on the Launcher (or says it’s not present), make sure to check your Playset in the Launcher: click Mods > Manage Playset > Add More Mods, and select it. If this does not work, try the following steps.

  1. Make sure you are subscribed to the correct Cold War Iron Curtain page on the Steam Workshop Correct Cold War: Iron Curtain page on the Steam Workshop
  2. Make sure the mod to is in a Playset.
    1. Click the small arrows at the right hand side of the Playset box (below the play button)
    2. Click ‘Add new Playset’
    3. Add a name to the new Playset
    4. Click ‘Add Mods’
    5. Click the checkbox on the right of ‘Cold War Iron Curtain’
  3. If the mod still does not appear on the mods list after clicking on ‘Add mods’, download this .mod file and place it in the mod folder at Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV\mod
    • This forces the mod to appear on the mod list
  4. If the mod loads the vanilla (no mod) version of HoI4
    1. Unsubscribe from the mod on Steam
    2. Delete folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\workshop\content\394360
    3. Delete folder Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV
    4. Subscribe again on Steam
    5. If needed, repeat step ii and iii

Crash on loading/startup

Some players (on old PCs mostly) either crash or freeze on ‘Precalculating naval Distances’. If that happens, try these steps one by one and try to launch the game with the mod loaded after each step.

  1. Confirm that you have no mods enabled that will conflict with CWIC

  2. Make sure you are on the correct HOI4 Version for the mod

  3. Restart PC

  4. Clear the game cache in the HoI4 launcher

  5. Go to Windows Update and check if there are any pending updates

  6. Verify your drivers for newer versions

  7. Do a clean HoI4 Installation

    1. Fully uninstall HoI4
    2. Unsubscribe from the mod on Steam
    3. Delete folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\workshop\content\394360
    4. Delete folder Documents\Paradox Interactive\Hearts of Iron IV
    5. Delete Folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Hearts of Iron IV
    6. Reinstall HoI4
    7. Verify game files in Steam
    8. Run base HoI4 vanilla without any mods to the main menu, then quit the game
    9. Subscribe again on Steam
    10. Add the mod to a Playset
  8. Use the "-OpenGL" launch option on steam (right-click on Hearts of Iron IV on Steam, click on Properties then write -OpenGL in Launch Options

  9. If none of the above work, then you need a better computer - 16gb RAM, GPU (4GB+ VRAM) and an SSD are recommended.

  • If you load the mod up to the Main Menu and crash during “loading wire frames”, try lowering the Graphics Settings or doing steps 4.v and 4.vi.
