return source byte as an argument (so we can check for errors)

change readDest to output byte as argument, so we can return an error if necessary

write a word at a time, keep track of where we are in the word to figure out how to return the byte (buffer or file). getting closer, works for small test but failing on bigger file.

delta of 0 should still read from buffer. seems to work now
