it might be helpful to include the version of the bootimage in this template name as well, since it doesn't seem like there's another place to tag it

I'm unsure if the vcenter system permits all the special characters/length, so perhaps something simple like the RHCOS major.minor (example Template-rhcos-9-6) instead of the whole version string might be a good idea.

How about using the "such as using the {op-system-first} version number in the image name" wording that we have in the procedure for a few other platforms?
On the Select a name and folder tab, set a Virtual machine name for your template, such as using the {op-system-first} version number in the image name.

Hmm on second thought could we reword:
On the Select a name and folder tab, set a Virtual machine name for your template. Include the {op-system-first} version in the name (for example, template-rhcos-9.6) to make it easier to identify the {op-system} version when performing future updates.
