Scribble

Welcome to Scribble! A clone of the popular word-based board game :D

How Does the Game Start?

The game will commence with one of the players placing their first word on the centre of the game board. Who gets to play first? It’s up to you! Turn order follows the order in which people joined the game. What first word can the player choose? Any word they want if it fits onto the board!

When placing the first word on the board, the following should be adhered to:

1. The first word must be at least 2 letters long.

2. One of the letters in the first word must sit on the centre square of the game board.

NOTE: You can’t place words on the board diagonally at any point during the game.

At the start of the game, The game asks the starting player to enter the first word to add onto the board. It also asks them to stipulate any other information too, e.g., whether to place the word vertically or horizontally. After the first word has been placed onto the board, the game calculates the points for each letter that the word contains and add these to the starting player’s score. Now that the first word has been placed, the game has commenced, and the remaining players will take turns to add words of their own.

Taking A Turn of the Game

Each player will be offered a turn of the game, one after another. On each player’s turn, the following happens:

1. The player is offered their turn. They can then play or pass.

2. The player provides a word that they want to add onto the board.

3. The player intimate where on the board the word should be placed, and whether it
should be placed vertically or horizontally. They can do this by specifying an [x, y] location
on the game board where their word starts and then 'H' or 'V'.

4. After their word has been placed onto the board, the points for each word they have created
will be calculated and added to that player’s score.

5. The turn of play can move to the next player.

NOTE: there are certain rules about how words can be placed on the board. These are described below.

Rules for Placing Words on the Board

When placing a new word on the board, it must build upon a word that is already there. Specifically, the first or last letter of the new word being added must coincide with a letter in a word or extends a word already on the board. The new word is formed so that it reads correctly in either a horizontal or vertical direction. Some examples are needed to clarify! below shows part of a game board with the word ‘mountain’ on it:

The next player spots the letter ‘m’ on the board at position [6][5] (row 6, column 5). They decide to add the word ‘map’ starting from this location. The first letter of the word is already there: ‘m’. The letters ‘ap’ can now be added underneath this in a downwards vertical direction to form the word.

Above shows another word added to the game board too. Assume that the next player in the game has spotted the letter ‘t’ at position [6][9] (row 6, column 9). They decide to add the word ‘paint’ onto the board such that it ends at this location, i.e., that’s where the last letter in the word will be. The last letter of the word is already there: ‘t’. The letters ‘pain’ can now be added above this in a vertical direction to form the word.

The examples above show how a word can be added vertically. It is possible to add words horizontally too, following the same rules. For example, below shows that the word ‘aim’ has been added, with the first letter of the word coinciding with an existing letter ‘a’ at position [3][9] on the board. Similarly, the word ‘ship’ being added so that its final letter coincides with the existing letter ‘p’ at position [8][5] on the board.

So, during a player’s turn, it is possible for them to stipulate the following: a position on the board where they want to place a new word, the direction for their word to be placed on the board (e.g., vertically, or horizontally placed at that position), as well as the actual letters for the word itself.

Players can also choose to extend words already on the board. The next player spots ‘map’ alredy on the board at position [6][5] (row 6, column 5). They decide to extend the word to ‘mapping’ starting from this same location. The first part of the word is already there: ‘map’. Thus letters ‘ping’ can now be added underneath this to form the full word.

Players extending words also have the option to possibly make multiple words at once! The following player realises they can play the word ‘sassy’ at position [3][13] (row 3, column 13). This word is unobstructed an unconnected but expands the word ‘mountain’ to ‘mountains’ allowing it's play and scoring points for both ‘sassy’ and ‘mountains’. The resulting board is shown below

What Words Are Valid?

In the game of Scribble, the great Scribble board has a vast list of allowed words, 198,422 to be exact. Don't worry theres plenty to go about! The game will tell you if a word you have entered is invalid.

How Are Word Scores Calculated?

Each letter of the alphabet is assigned points based on how frequently it can be used. Some letters (such as Z) are harder to use in words than others (such as A). Below shows a list of the scores that are associated with each letter in the alphabet and a list of modifier tiles

When a word has been placed onto the board, the game totals up the points for each letter that it contains and then add this to the player’s overall score. When totaling the points, ALL letters of the word are included and any other words made, even letters that are already on the board.

Example: Back in the placement examples, the word ‘ship’ was added. The letter ‘p’ was already on the board because it was part of a word added by a previous player. However, when counting the score for the current player for the word ‘ship’, the points for letter ‘p’ can be given to the current player since a new word has been formed.

Special Tiles

The Game of Scribble also contains an array of special tiles to shake gameplay up these include:

'+' - This tile signifies a Double letter score! Any letter placed on this tile will be worth double points. '*' - This tile designates a Triple letter score! Any letter placed on this tile will be worth triple points. '&' - This tile shows a Double word score! Any word running over this tile doubles the score of the entire word. '@' - This tile is a TRIPLE WORD SCORE!!! Any word running over this tile has its score tripled. '%' - Last but not least, This tile is the centre of the board. The first turn must run over this tile.

When Does the Game End?

In the game of Scribble, as players have an unlimited supply of letters, the game can end after a number of conditions:

1. The game ends when the game board has become full.

2. The game ends when no player can add a valid word anymore. Signalled by all players passing on their turn.

3. The game ends with the first player who gets to a set score or the game ends when all players have had a set number turns of the game.

4. During any player’s turn, you can simply choose to end the game at any time
instead of entering another word onto the board.

When the game is complete, the player with the highest score will win!
