<problem_statement>Restaurants and grocery stores discard tons of edible food daily due to surplus, while local shelters and food pantries struggle with food insecurity. The primary barrier is the lack of a quick and efficient communication channel to connect a food surplus with a nearby need.</problem_statement>

<solution_proposal>
How do you envision the ideal solution to this problem?

Which ServiceNow products or capabilities would be used?

Simple, fast, and mobile-first application built on ServiceNow that connects food donors and recipients.

Now Mobile / Service Portal - restaurant manager uses a super simple mobile interface to create a "Food Available" post in under 30 seconds. Charities would receive push notification on their phones and could "claim" a donation with a single tap

Workflow Studio Flow Designer - when a donation is posted, flow would trigger, using geolocation data to identify the cloest available charities and send them notifications in a prioritized order. It would also handle the "claiming" logic to ensure only one charity responds

App Engine Studio: Can be used to quickly build necessary custom tables for Donors (restaurants), Recipients (charities), and Donations.

Platform Analytics: dashboard to provide real-time tracking of key metrics (pounds of food saved, meals provided, etc.) for program managers and community stakeholders.

Are there any technical dependencies for the proposed solution?

Mapping Service Integration - API like Google Maps to handle geolocation, calculate distance between donors and charities, and provide directions for pickup

Notification Services - real-time alerts, integrating with a push notification service (for mobile) and SMS gateway (like Twilio) would be far more effective than relying solely on email

What challenges would you foresee in implementing this idea?

Chicken and Egg problem: platform value depends on critical mass of both restaurants willing to post donations and charities ready to pick them up. Onboarding and engaging both sides of the marketplace simultaneously would be the biggest initial hurdle

Logistics of transporation: app connects supply with demand, but doesn't solve physical transportation. Smaller charities may lack volunteer drivers or vehicles needed to pick up donations on short notice, which could lead to failed pickups

Food Safety and liability concerns: although laws protect food donors, businesses can be hesitant to donate prepared foods due to perceived liability risks. The platform would need to build trust and provide clear information on Good Samaritan laws to overcome this

</solution_proposal>
