This repo was used to create the vagrant images that are found at https://app.vagrantup.com/kilroy396

This repo is used to build either CentOS or Fedora vagrant boxes for the virtualbox provider. The starting point is to use the centos/7 and fedora/26-cloud-base images on Vagrant Cloud. The build localise the repo source, and installs the VirtualBox Guest Extensions. In the case of CentOS, it also enables the epel-release package and localises that repositories source.

To use the repo, undertake the following steps:

  1. Go to http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/ and identify the latest Guest Additions to install. As required, edit the Vagrantfile's url for this.

  2. Verify the correct local repo settings. This will avoid the costs of going off site for a mirror if a local one exists; otherwise leave the defaults in place by removing the lines containing sed statements.

  3. Ennsure that you have installed the vagrant-reload plugin installed, via; vagrant plugin install vagrant-reload. The plugin is used to avoid the situation where we install Virtualbox Guest Additon and we have a mismatch between the active kernel and the kernel headers. It just depends on the initial box image and its active kernel and the state of play for updates. A reload ensures we shouldn't encounter a mismatch.

  4. Use the Vagrant file to start either a Centos or Fedora virtualbox machine (it will default to the virtualbox provier) e.g. vagrant up centos to create the target box.

  5. After the box is running, without errors, use the appropriate vagrant packaging command for your operating system and provier e.g. vagrant package centos --output someones-centos7.box

  6. Upload the image to Vagrant Cloud, or use it locally via vagrant box add someones-centos7 someones-centos7.box

If disk image size goes wayward, run du -kscxh * or install ncdu. You can then investigate which components are contributing to the image size.
