USB drive unavailable/undetected above 6.12.59

After using rpi-update to upgrade from 6.12.59 to a higher version and rebooting, the USB attached SSD is not detected and can't be used. This happens with versions 6.12.60 through 6.12.62 (not tested with higher as not yet available at the time of writing) and on multiple Raspberry Pi 4Bs.
Restoration of a backup makes the USB attached SSD visible and usable again.

When you say the SSD is not detected, does it show up in lsusb? Are you trying to boot from it? And have you tried winding back to 6.12.59? sudo rpi-update 09c327d should do it.

It does not show up, I don't try to boot from it as I boot from an SD and I only found the correct hash to rewind yesterday, so haven't tried that yet.

It might also be interesting to try hot-plugging the SSD, i.e. plugging it in after the Pi has booted, if you haven't done so already.

I've tried everything I could think of including hot-plugging the first time it happened. Nothing helped but re-flashing the SD-card with a backup from the night before.

For what it is worth, winding back worked like a charm (just did an upgrade with the by now expected results and did a wind back).
One thing I noted is that 6.12.59 starts a lot quicker than 6.12.62 (state changing from "starting" to "running" after coming on-line, which also takes a lot longer with 6.12.62).

The same problems occur with version 6.18.1, USB not available and much slower booting. Winding back to 6.12.59 solved the problem for now.
