How to access the portal or configure anything with the self-hosted docker image

Well... The tutorial how to run it in docker is straight forward. But it completely lacks any other information in the docs. Yes, it's running now, but then? I could sign up and can now edit my profile. Great. But how the heck do I configure it now for my application? Set the name, configure password policies, RBAC etc.?

Nowhere is mentioned how to access the portal let alone if there is even a portal. ChatGPT has been hallucinating for hours now giving me the weirdest approaches that all did not work.

In the config yaml is a portal mentioned for logout with portal.localhost:8000 - but calling that in the browser gives me a JSON payload "NOT FOUND" and that's it.

Hell, it's really frustrating... If there was at least some information if that can even be done with the docker image. But no, it's a single page with hardly any information about it while everything else in the docs is tailored for the cloud or ONCE versions.

Please anybody help OR Authgear Team please update your docs and general information about it. I wanted to use Authgear for a personal project as we discovered it at my company and want to use it in the future. But seeing how much time I have to waste to get the information I need or set it up correctly really leads me to reconsidering that choice :(

@Skyppid Sorry about the issues you have encountered with. We're a small team trying to build the best CIAM out there that's modern and long lasting. I'm sorry we disappointed you.

To make it sustainable, we tried to monetize it with the Cloud, to-be-honest that takes the majority of our time. We understand there is a lot of effort to support people who want to self-host, so we developed the ONCE version which takes a lot of assumption but should works with most situations, and very easy to install.

Somehow at time passes, we didn't update the open sources instruction and spend most of our time with the commercial versions.

We realize currently the run with Docker (https://docs.authgear.com/deployment/local) documentation didn't include the instruction with setting up Authgear Portal.

We're working on it, and will revert here once it's done. Give us a few days, and thanks for choosing us.

Thanks for the quick response! I get that you need to make money to keep this running and offering free or almost free versions is top-notch in today's world. It was just frustrating as it's seemingly so new and not much adapted that Googling that issue does not bring up anything nor does AI help as it's just hallucinating results.

Thanks a heap for updating the docs and giving some guidance for the custom hosting :) Looking forward to trying it out!

It is still possible to self-host and we give the same security update to open sources version as our commercial offer.

It's basically a warning such that people who intended to self-host or use the open sources need to be responsible for their own data / systems for security and availability, etc. Hope it helps clarify :)

@chpapa @fungc-io I've set it up and after a few hours of fiddeling around (as the example is too barebones and doesn't work for our scenario) it now works. All I wonder now is: Is there a way to set it up using the Portal, export the configuration and re-import it when recreating the containers?

We need a replicatable environment for all devs and ideally it should not be necessary to do any manual work to get it up and running. Keycloak allows this by providing a realm.json file which defines all the roles, groups, clients, etc.

Is there a way in AuthGear?

In the docker compose example, the config will be saved to the local database.
You can dump and restore the following tables: 

• _portal_config_source
• _portal_domain
