Unable to have a working desktop

Bug Description

Unable to get a desktop showing

Steps to Reproduce

Have tested:

• using Ubuntu 25.04 server iso
• using Ubuntu 24.04.03 LTS server iso

Both options were installed in Virt_Manager.

Installation Journey 🧑‍💻

1. Standard Ubuntu Server installation (minimal with at least 60Gb disk space)
2. SSH into your server

    cd config && \
    ./bootstrap.sh

4. Reboot into Nøughty Linux

Expected Behavior

After a reboot, having a working desktop.

I have tested the repo with updated data and even tried with the 2 pull requests that are in the queue.

But that is not enought the /etc/noughty/greetd config.toml and regreet.toml are not being polulated, you will need to for now comment out line 94

Still there will be no desktop file created, but you can edit the desktop session entry with the pencil and type in hyprland (provided that is what you chose in config.toml)

I have tried all the suggestions above in 24.04.3 LTS without success for the time being.

Running bootstrap.sh does not enable the desktop by default currently because desktop.compositor in conifg.toml is set to "" by default:

Edit config.toml and change the compositor setting to hyprland or wayfire.

Hey @flexiondotorg, thank you for clarifying that part. Do you suggest any in particular?

After setting "hyprland", what is the best course of action? just update, build, switch ?

I ran into this as well. After reboot no gui.

I cd into NoughtyLinux (I had to do something with direnv no idea what that is) modified config.toml and ran the most likely looking command from the bootstrap.sh script.

nix develop --no-update-lock-file --impure --command just switch

After another reboot greetd is running but has errors with pam. Could you share your steps for getting a working gui? I normally use KDE with X11 (older install) so I've not had to configure wayland before.

This bit me as well. Applying #4 fixed it for me. I was able to start wayfire and hyprland after setting the compositor accordingly, running just switch, and then rebooting.
