Bug description
I have an ext4 formatted external hard disk drive to be mounted automatically when I start LMDE. This is managed by a setting in Nemo. This stopped working when I upgraded from LMDE 6 to LMDE 7 in November 2025.
After the upgrade it did not automount any more despite the tick box in Nemo was still ticked:
Nemo > Settings > Behaviour > Automatically mount movable media when inserted and at start [tick box]
Remark: My translation to English.
When I have read in forums I have learned, correct or not, that this tick box is overridden by a changed setting for ext formatted media originating from Debian 13:
/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/64-ext4.rules
the row:
SUBSYSTEM=="block", ENV{ID_FS_TYPE}=="ext2|ext3|ext4|ext4dev|jbd", ENV{UDISKS_AUTO}="0"
By changing the "0" to "1", the automount works again for me.
A few days ago, the automount stopped working again. This was after LMDE 7 got numerous updates after Linux Mint 22.3 was released. My assumption is that any of these updates caused the file mentioned above to be reverted to Debian 13 default setting. I believe it is possible to make this setting more permanent.
However, this bug report is for Nemo; the tick box does not have the desired affect currently, likely caused by changes in Debian 13 as described above.
Steps to reproduce
- Nemo > Settings > Behaviour > Automatically mount movable media when inserted and at start [ mark the tick box] (my translation to English).
- Insert an ext4 formatted external hard disk drive to a USB connection.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Nemo.
- Check if the external hard disk drive is mounted or not. The bug is reproduced if the external hard disk drive is not mounted.
Expected behavior
When the tick box "Automatically mount movable media when inserted and at start" (my translation to English) is marked, an external drive connected to USB should be automatically mounted if inserted before start of the computer.
