Launch a game that is not registered

Is it at all possible to use dprun to launch a game that is not registered? I see that GameRanger is able to do that somehow. It can run the game through DirectPlay by just knowing path to the exe.

The issue is that registering a game requires adding stuff to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE which requires elevated access on modern Windows.

Btw, I want to develop a GameRanger alternative to a specific game to improve the players' experience, and it would be nice to not need elevated access to run the game.

I forgot most I know about DirectPlay. This tool probably isn't able to do that as it stands. But fundamentally a DirectPlay lobbying application just spawns an exe with some command line parameters (or maybe it sends some special message to the process) internally... so it should be possible to mimic this without the registry.

I forgot most I know about DirectPlay. This tool probably isn't able to do that as it stands. But fundamentally a DirectPlay lobbying application just spawns an exe with some command line parameters (or maybe it sends some special message to the process) internally... so it should be possible to mimic this without the registry.

It turns out it is not that simple as DirectPlay passes connection settings to the launched game application using IPC.

The easiest way I can think of to make this work is to have game applications registered in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. Then registrations can be made without elevated access. This would then require dprun to be modified to use something like detours to have registry read calls to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectPlay\Applications redirected to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\DirectPlay\Applications.

Unfortunately I dont know much C++ to get that far.
