gitbutler app locks up when displaying a branch

Describe the issue

The UI becomes completely unresponsive on the branches page when viewing one of my branches. Quiting and restarting just brings me back to the branches page with the same branch selected and the UI is unresponsive again.

I cannot get out of this state and gitbutler is now completely unusable.

I was viewing the branch without issues on the branches page. I tried to apply and got a message about there being conflicts. I unapplied the stack. This was a very old branch that had not been updated with commits from main in a while. Separately in my terminal I merged the main branch in then went back to bitbutler to try to apply the branch to the workspace again.

I got an error (lower right part of the window) about their being conflicts and the apply operation failed. From this point the UI became unresponsive and I am snow stuck in this state.

How to reproduce (Optional)

1. Install gitbutler
2. add a repo, chose target branch
3. view branches on branches page
4. attempt to apply existing branch, get notified of conflicts
5. unapply stack
6. perform merge of main branch in terminal window
7. got back to branches page, attempt to apply branch again
8. apply fails, get error message, dismiss error
9. UI unresponsive even after quit and re-launch of application

After opening this issue I returned to the app and it had switched to the workspace page.. I had clicked this button approx 15 minutes earlier... so I guess the app isn't completely unresponsive but it is essentially unusable at this point. Every attempt to navigate somplace in the app sits for many minutes before the UI updates.

After a total of about 20 minutes the UI started responding again.. until I went back to the branches page, viewed the branch I had merged main into and selected the most recent commit.. then the app goes back to being unresponsive for many minutes at a time.

The most recent merge commit has ~1900 changed files.

Don't know if this matters.. the branch is linked to a git worktree.. so I merged main in a different directory from where the target branch (main) is checked out. I did not manipulate the gitbutler/workspace or gitbutler/target branches.

Thanks a lot for reporting!

The application is known to have some UI issues displaying a lot of entities, but particularly so if the tree-view is enabled for uncommitted files. Might this be the case here?

Something that would be interesting to learn is which process is burning CPU. Is it the tauri://localhost process, or the Gitbutler Tauri process?

The tauri:// one is the frontend.

I moved on to trying to work with some other branches.. so.. if/when get back to the branch that was causing the issue if the issue persistes I'll report back with some more info.
