Started with a VM with Ubuntu MATE 25.04.
Then I uninstalled most of the desktop, and rebuilt the latest desktop from source (probably not the best way to do this); I included caja, caja-extensions, mate-common, mate-desktop, mate-menus, mate-panel, mate-terminal; just to get myself going.
Running mate-panel then resulted in:
The panel encountered a problem while loading "BriskMenuFactory::BriskMenu"
So I downloaded the latest tarball here, used the build instructions, and then I still get the same error. I also can't "add" or "remove" BriskMenu from the panel.
Possibly relevant:
user@home:~$ dconf dump /org/mate/panel/objects/briskmenu/
[/]
applet-iid='BriskMenuFactory::BriskMenu'
locked=false
object-type='applet'
position=5
relative-to-edge='start'
toplevel-id='top'
And the following output from meson-log.txt:
Failed to guess install tag for /usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.mate.panel.applet.BriskMenuFactory.service
