That's a long message for i2c. That driver has a much shorter limit. Older versions could do more, but then the chip can't report errors. You could try to roll back to commit bbdbc85 "Convert the whole driver to an MFD driver" and see if that works better.

I just tried it... now it doesn't report errors, but it can't read from I2C.
