For anyone interested, a straightforward way to update the scripts without performing a full reflash is to locate the call to esptool.py within the build process and replicate the command. For example:

esptool.py --chip esp32s3 -p /dev/cu.usbmodem11101 -b 460800 --before=default_reset --after=hard_reset write_flash --flash_mode dio --flash_freq 80m --flash_size 4MB 0x210000 build/assets.bin
