Microsoft Network MIDI 2.0 compatibility

Hi @davidmoreno, are the recent updates to Microsoft MIDI on your radar at all? I'm wondering about the possibility of creating a compatibility layer for Network MIDI 2.0. Is this something you've considered at all?

It would be amazing. I found the networking code, but I have no idea on windows APIs. (https://github.com/microsoft/MIDI/tree/main/src/api/Transport/UdpNetworkMidi2Transport)

There is ALSA support for MIDI 2.0 too, so it should be possible to make them talk: https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/sound/designs/midi-2.0.html

I don't have any MIDI 2.0 device, but by that linux midi 2.0 page, it's possible to create a midi 2.0 gadget for example in a raspberry pi.. so I might take a look.

Anyway I digress. It would be cool. Dont known where to even start.

Do anybody know any documentation about the MIDI 2.0 UDP protocol implemented in the Windows Network MIDI 2.0?

Cool, glad this has piqued your interest as well! Sadly, I also know nothing about Windows APIs but it would be a great learning opportunity. I guess ideally the full MIDI 2.0 stack would be available, but it's also possible there could be a way to at least have a compatibility layer so that RTP MIDI 1.0 messages could be sent and understood by Microsoft's implementation. This would allow for low latency and jitter compared to Tobias Erichsen's rtpMIDI.

As of this blog post in October, the Network MIDI 2.0 standard was not yet finalized, but I imagine there will be more concrete info on this soon.

My ultimate dream would be to have a Raspberry Pi acting as a seamless intermediary between other devices and a PC. The timing is super tight when just going between hardware MIDI devices and the Pi via iConnectivity stuff, so I'm hoping the same would be possible with the PC in the mix once the new protocol rolls out.

I thought it might be helpful to post this here. Should be most of the boilerplate needed, although I can't test between Linux and Windows yet as the "controlled feature rollout" in my Windows beta build hasn't added the new MIDI features yet. Hopefully in the next month or two I'll be able to start experimenting with this.
