Tracking issue for next release series

This is a tracking issue for the next set of breaking releases which are currently under development on the master branch:

• aead v0.6
• async-signature v0.6 (merged into signature)
• cipher v0.5 (cipher v0.5.0 #2281)
• crypto-common v0.2 (crypto-common v0.2.0 #2276)
• digest v0.11 (digest v0.11.0 #2300)
• elliptic-curve v0.14
• kem v0.3 (kem v0.3.0 #2356)
• password-hash v0.6 (password-hash v0.6.0 #2338)
• signature v3.0
• universal-hash v0.6 (Release universal-hash v0.6.0 #2317)

If need be we can subdivide this issue into separate issues for specific (or all) crates above.

#1677 suggests merging async-signature into signature, which would eliminate the need for another async-signature release

@tarcieri there haven’t been many updates on this lately.
I think more and more people are waiting/depending on the pre-release definitions of the kem traits as the PQC transition efforts are well under way.

Do you think there is any chance of a release soon, maybe tackling a smaller subset of planned changes?
It seems to me the major blocker for release is the CryptoRng issue, but it is hard for me to figure out how to contribute to speed up the process!

rand_core v0.7 should be released relatively soon, but we are likely to wait until Rust 1.85 release to migrate to the 2024 edition. See #1717.

Probably, no. I don't think it makes sense to start a new breaking release cycle to just bump edition one-two months later. Plus, there are some unresolved issues with the aead and cipher crates.

@tarcieri is there a timeline for this? we are having a constant build error cycle for a few months now because of the versioning issues.

We can probably start releasing some of the crates that are lower in the dependency hierarchy soon
