Confusing grading dates for instructor generated LTI updates

When RS sends a grade update via LTI, the submission is dated at the time of sending. This works fine for student generated events. But it does mean that when an instructor pushes grades after a deadline, those updates can show up as "late" in the LMS gradebook.

Perhaps grader panel generated updates could look up the last student work for the assignment and use that date.

This would be an amazing addition. Currently I've had to repeatedly reassure my students that even though Canvas is saying their work is late, it wasn't actually and I know it wasn't.

I wasn't even aware this was an option; I just thought that the submission date was determined by Canvas as when the grade came in.

From the grading panel we are sending an update on the entire assignment I think. Maybe this is different for LTI 1.3?

So we would need to look at all of the questions and their grading mode (first, last, best answer) and then get the latest date out of all those to send along? All of the answers in the xxxx_answers table are timestamped (UTC) when the answer is submitted.

Or maybe we add a timestamp to the question_grades table and stamp that with the time that the student did the work for that question. Then we could simply look at that table.

I don't think it is a huge amount of work either way. And since pushing the button from the grading panel does not happen millions of times a day it wouldn't add a huge load.

Eventually all the LTI1p3 grades get routed through _send_lti1p3_score_updates which sends the time_now() as the timestamp.

So there would need to be some logic to determine when to send a different datetime as well as logic to get that datetime.

As for when to send a different value, that might need some more logic. There is a force parameter that tells the functions involved to send the update regardless of what the due date is. That is used when instructors push grades from grading panel. That might cover all times we would want to rely on an existing date.

For what to send, the "push grades" currently doesn't recalculate anything. It sends what is in the Grade table. Maybe upsert_grade could be modified to timestamp. But regardless of where it goes, there will be some work to make sure those dates only get set by student actions.

I don't intend to work on this for a while (Summer?) - mostly made it as a reminder for myself.

I don't think time stamping the grade table is the right approach as that could be updated well after the due date. I feel like the right time to use is the time in the xxxx_answers tables as that represents when the student submitted the work.

I think a crud function like get_latest_submission_time_for_assignment needs to be written.
