No connection via Shuttle

I've followed all the instructions in the README for creating an SSH tunnel using Shuttle.

Shuttle reports:

client: Connected.

However, no traffic appears to get tunneled. Running a simple ping google.com times out and I can access no web sites.

Are there any additional steps to get tethering via the tunnel to work?

I'm on Ubuntu. I found if I run:

ssh -N -D 9999 -p 8022 <myphoneuser>@<myphoneip>

and then use Ubuntu's "Network Proxy" dialog to set it to manual with "Socks Host" entry of host localhost with port 9999, then it successfully tunnels http connections.

No other protocols work, however, like ping or ssh (outside of my phone's IP, e.g. I can't shell into a server at somerandomdomain.com).

Is there a proxy setting to get those to work?

I could not get it to work in ubuntu but I did get it working in windows with Putty
