Description
I started doing some validation work on ResStock 2024 buildings. I've only run the first 10 buildings and 3 upgrade cases:
- up00: Baseline
- up06: ENERGY STAR ASHP with electric backup + envelope upgrade
- up11: ENERGY STAR ASHP with electric backup + envelope upgrade + HPWH + appliance electrification
Here's what I've found so far:
- Total energy is usually too low (relative to ResStock), by about 10%
- Most of the error is in HVAC. We substantially overestimate HVAC Heating and underestimate HVAC Cooling.
- Water Heating looks very good (~1% error) except we underestimate energy for HPWH.
- Other energy is good (after the fixes below).
Things I've fixed so far (in the resstock-2024-fixes branch):
- Fixed adjusted number of bedrooms
- Updated defaults for schedule multipliers
- Added Freezer equipment
HVAC will take some time. I think the next step there is to run more samples, probably the 500 that Jeff created a while back. @sugirdhalakshmi have you done anything with those yet?
On the HPWH, it looks like we run the ER element way less than ResStock. ResStock seems to run the ER much more in the winter, at least for one building that I looked at with the HPWH in the garage (in Texas). See average daily consumption plots below:
Thoughts on how to address this, or if ResStock is overestimating actual energy use?
