Description
from OSL:
I like to perform comparisons of the geometry between two categories of structures. When I run the PGD website in two browsers on the same machine the searches are clearly getting confused.
To replicate: open a browser tab with the pgd site and perform a default search. Then open a new browser with the pgd site again, and change the default search a bit (say change the middle omega angle filter to "-40-40") and perform a search. The first search will have returned 91,504 hits and the second 318. When you hit the reload button on the first browser tab the plot will not have 91,504 hits but now have 318.
In fact the problem is first seen when the second tab is opened to the pgd home page. The number of hits from the search in the other tab is reported in the second line of the page. Since no search has been performed in this tab there should be no search results to report.

I'm working behind a NAT router. Searches performed on browsers on different computers behind the firewall appear to be correctly segregated. The cache appears to be identified by more than the IP address and is specialized down to the individual computer, but not to the individual browser on the computer.

I'll update the python models to handle multiple search queries and use cookies to separate the sessions.
(At least, that sounds like the right way to do this. I've never used cookies, let alone much of javascript, which says something.)

Didn't put too much time into this due to 9495, won't have time in the near future. Deassigning myself.

Cookies will give per-browser query caching. You won't be able to open two tabs from one browser session and perform independent searches unless one of the tabs is in "incognito mode" or something, but you will definitely be able to have one session in Firefox and one session in Chrome and have them both be independent from each other as an example.

And in fact, that's how it works currently. I just tested the behavior with Chrome and Opera and got two separate unconnected search caches.

After discussion today, I understand better how to test the issue. I need two separate computers behind a NAT-based firewall, each with two different browsers. I have this setup at home, so I'll give it a try there.

I was wrong yesterday, this is not a problem with NAT and there is no confusion between different computers. The confusion occurs between different tabs open to the PGD, either in the same browser or in seperate windows. I have ran though a bunch of tests this morning and the problem still persists. I can include a detailed log of what I did but basically it is the same what I wrote in the original problem statement. (I am working in Firefox.)
When I am shopping on amazon.com in multiple tabs I expect that I will have one shopping cart shared among them. It would be very confusing if it were otherwise. When I am performing serches in two tabs I expect the searchs to be independent. It would be very confusing if it were otherwise. These are different situations and we need different behavior.
