ESLint Peer Dependency 8 excludes legacy implementation

It seems like beyond 3.3.2 this package is not usable for projects which use ESLint under v8. We're on v6.8.0 currently, not sure if that is reasonably supported, but we are hoping to update at some point 🙏

Gathering some notes for myself here:

ESLint v9 was requested in #33, added in #34, and released in 3.4.0.

There was 3.4.0 breaks eslint 8 to do with peers which was fixed in 3.9.1.

The only possibly relevant change in 3.3.2 is this typo fix, it seems unlikely, but it is inside ESLint's meta – if you change that back in your local node_modules, does it work?

I doubt it but that's all I see.

I think it's just the peerDependencies jump from 5 to 8 (or 9 as is the case in 3.4.0 which contains the first breaking change):

3.3.2 seems to work okay—are versions below v8 supported? I saw the note about "For ESLint 8 and below." but maybe that doc is just stale.
