Part of our community calls are being used as Open Office Hours to reach community consensus on the foundation's next phases and address questions and blockers on the DevRel Challenges and Frequently Asked Questions. If you would like to get involved, this is a safe and welcoming space to start!

Meeting Notes

The open forum started with a follow-up on the community engagement & location survey and explained that is the first touchpoint for people to express interest in helping and ways they would like to help

Continued with reviewing challenges.md - There was a comment related to a CHAOSS exiting issue about metrics chaoss/wg-metrics-development#231 that can potentially be used as a baseline in one of the future SIG in DevRel Foundation

• Note from DM: This may be of tangential interest and is the metric around advocacy/outreach that I suggested in the CHAOSS project - New Metric Idea: Advocacy/Outreach chaoss/wg-metrics-development#231

The next topic was a discussion around building a roadmap for the DevRel foundation - Attendees expressed the need to understand the challenges with priorities the community would like to address

• WF shared thoughts on a WIP idea - Buid phases to initiate the working groups/sig and leaders in the community. The intention is to figure out all the different resources out there, what needs to be done, what has been done already, etc. The first phase would be to Brainstorm issues and group them into groups, from those groups (stated in the challenges). Then find leaders to find solutions. This will be documented in the gh repo later next week and used next community/office hours calls for feedback

The topic moved into Linux Foundation structure and models. During the call, there was clarification that this is an unfunded project under LF and community-driven. Same as how SPDX or CHAOSS operates (no organizations funding this)

• ON asked the question Why This is under LF project vs https://lf-charities.org/ ?. People on the call didn't have enough context about the legal aspects and options under LF. there is a to-do task to come up with an answer to this and include in the FAQ doc
  • Update: A new section in the FAQ has been proposed via PR for clarity
    This collaborative project has been hosted as a community project, with no funding involved. This means taking advantage of the governance structure, project management staff, and back-end resources that the Linux Foundation (LF) provides to all hosted projects under an unfunded model, to ensure long-term sustainability. Developer Relations Foundation is part of the LF project series, as a non-profit 501(c)(6). Examples of these projects include SPDX (SBOM Standard), FOSSology, or CHAOSS.

Finally, the discussion came back to providing feedback about the challenges document:

Two questions to think about "Is everything in CHALLENGES covered by the DevRel Foundation? Will it be prioritized and tackled in separate phases?"

• A reflection from Atsushi "I don't think it would be useful to summarise the tools, as they vary from period to period, market to market and country to country. Some will be added, but some services will disappear in acquisitions. I don't think it would be useful to create a directory as well, as people change jobs and start their own businesses (it's hard to keep it updated)

• Other reflections shared:

  • it would be beneficial to have data about the companies with a DevRel discipline rather than a list of professionals.
  • That’s a good point. DevRel Landscape project can be an idea to develop together
  • Yep, because as much as we learn from individuals, we do want to have these frameworks, metrics, and models adopted by companies (even if that is an eventual goal)

Other Topics Discussed

DM mentioned that some people might think these community calls are not intended for discussing and providing input on DevRel Foundation processes, as the term "community calls" is sometimes used for informal touchpoints where the community gathers. As a result, there is feedback suggesting that the name be changed to "Office Hours" so that people can have better expectations and a more secure space to attend these calls if they are interested in shaping the foundation's policies and processes.
