Very slow on machines with only 8G ram, and frequent crashes ..

What happened?

I have tried on an x86 machine and Apple mac m1, both with 8G ram.

Both types of machines are very slow in operation, e.g if I load an image for editing it takes 5..10 seconds to render completely.
Also, if I use masks, particularly the oval mask, if I do any action fast the program will just crash. I can't use it, same with linear gradient mask. The subject mask is ok.

I am using the CPU instead of GPU as I do not know how to set yp Intel GPU for the x86 machine or the right GPU for the Apple.

By the way, the only crop that works is 3:2 all the others do nothing..

The program is almost unusable. The features are great though, and when it works, it does the job ... just slowly.

What did you expect to happen?

Expect reasonably fast UI response ..
Expect no crashes.

How can we reproduce this?

Try any 8G ram machine.

I am editing Sony *.arw raw files (6000x4000)..

I can confirm the same behaviour on my system.

Arch Linux fully up to date, RapidRAW version 1.4.7-1 installed from the AUR, running on Wayland.

Hardware:
AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U
8 GB RAM
AMD Radeon 680M integrated GPU

Even when working with a folder that contains only a single compressed RAW file from a Fujifilm X100V, memory usage increases very quickly. RAM usage jumps to around 1 to 2 GB and editing feels very slow and unresponsive.

I have the same problem on M1 16GB RAM, it takes a long time to load raw photos, and then editing them takes even longer, every edit have about 1-2 seconds delay and everything is just slow and lags. I really wanted to use this instead of Lightroom for my small photography operation, but it is not there jet. Maybe in a year time it will be better.

I tested RapidRAW 1.4.7-1 on multiple systems and see consistent memory behavior, with significant differences in UI responsiveness.

Linux desktop:
CachyOS
Wayland with KDE Plasma 6.5.4

Hardware:
AMD Ryzen 5 3600X
32 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080

Result:
Opening a folder with 45 compressed RAW files from a Fujifilm X100V and browsing through the images causes RAM usage to steadily increase to around 5.5 GB. UI is sluggish and noticeably less responsive compared to tools like darktable on the same system.

macOS system:
Mac mini (2024)
Apple M4 Pro
24 GB unified memory
macOS 26.1

Result:
UI and editing performance are smooth and feel fine on this system. However, memory usage still scales very aggressively. Browsing through the same 45 Fujifilm X100V compressed RAW files increased memory usage to around 12 GB.

Conclusion:
While UI responsiveness differs significantly between Linux and macOS, high and steadily increasing memory usage occurs on both platforms. This suggests a platform independent memory management issue, with additional performance or rendering problems on Linux.

I am happy to provide logs, profiling output or run additional tests on any of these systems if that helps to diagnose the issue.

I’m experiencing the same issue as well: a MacBook Pro 2019, 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM. I noticed that this started happening after version 1.4.3. Starting from version 1.4.4, all processes became very slow, with the CPU hitting 100%. Therefore, up until now I am still using version 1.4.3, which runs normally.

On Ubuntu, even with a pretty fast machine (4070 super ti, 32gb ram), 1.4.7 is a bit laggy working with RAWs (in my case, Pentax K-3iii Monochrome DNG files). Not unusable at all, but slow...it's hard to adjust sliders smoothly as a result.

PR here: #475 to reduce the max mem usage by 75%+/- still has to be merged tough..
