Feature Suggestion: Merge Preview Image and Save Image into a single node with a 'Save' toggle

Right now, there are two output nodes: Preview Image and Save Image, which can be swapped via the right-click menu.
But this isn’t always convenient. If I don’t want to save an image at a given stage, I either have to swap the node to Preview Image, or add a separate Preview Image node and bypass the Save Image one.
My suggestion: merge them into a single node - let’s say Preview Image with an optional “Save” checkbox.
That way, you could preview results at any step in a multi-stage workflow and choose to save them (or not) with just a toggle - no need to keep swapping nodes or toggling them on and off, or clutter the graph with duplicate outputs.
This would be especially helpful in chained workflows where you might want to optionally save intermediate results without duplicating or reconfiguring nodes.
I couldn’t find an existing discussion or feature request about this, so I thought I’d share the idea here.

I am semi surprised this isn't a base functionality. Though it's not as "easy" as a python node, as they are intercepting the save file name somewhere else to allow for the custom tags to inject node details into the filename. Hense why i used the built in date helper functions here that are formatted differently. In order to grab data from the nodes in the workflow to inject their settings I'm pretty sure some javascript is required.

That's exactly what I meant. And adding a metadata toggle, which, if I understand correctly, disables embedding the workflow in the image, would be useful in certain situations. Funny how they've been putting so much effort into new features lately while overlooking basics like these.

How were you able to accept the same formatting variables as the base save node? Every time I attempted to pass the og variables for the date it starts freaking out on me and writing 0 byte files as soon as it reaches the ":".

It also completely ignored specific %node.information variables% when i attempted it.

I just pasted the "Save Image" and "Preview Image" node code into Perplexity, asking it to combine them into a single node the way I wanted. It rearranged the lines, adding new features while preserving the existing functionality.
