How to stop Consumer Sampler from polling an empty topic after given time

Hi,

I try to use the Consumer Sampler to read from a topic to verify result after a test. I would like the consumer to stop polling if there are no messages after some time. I have tried setting the thread group duration, using Runtime Controller and Sample Timeout preprocessor but the consumer continues polling after given time. What's your suggestion? Thanks!

I'm new to Jmeter so please excuse me for any misunderstandings.

Hello @stohu

you have you set the poll timeout in the consumer sampler

This will exit from the loop after the time specified - if no new messages were pushed in the topic

Thanks for the reply. I've been using 100ms poll timeout but this is just for one poll, correct? I saw in KafkaConsumerSampler

    do {
        records = consumer.poll(Duration.ofMillis(timeout)); // This will poll Single/multiple messages of records as per the config
    } while (records.isEmpty());

I suppose the consumer will keep on polling again and again if no messages come, until maybe some external interruption comes? Or am I misunderstanding something?

Thanks for sharing the testplan (next time, please try to put dummy values for your hostnames, credentials info).

You dont have any additional config settings added. You have to add auto.offset.reset config, that tells the plugin to how to read from the topic. The default will be always latest.

You need to set it to earliest, so that the plugin will start reading the messages
