add bench tests

as a low-level library, it makes sense for this to be a fairly performant implementation.

To that end, it would be useful to add some bench tests to set a baseline for future improvements, and to catch regressions.

I don't have a lot of experience creating bench tests in Rust, but I think Criterion is the gold standard at the moment
