Asynchronous communication

It might be worth looking into possibly making the serial communication asynchronous. This would make it possible to use the commands in a non blocking way in UI applications.

The pyserial package has a complimentary pyserial-asyncio package, that brings async support to serial communication. However, since the instrument request-response scheme is fundamentally a blocking process, it might not be feasible to pursue this route.
