Running mojo2600 pihole helm chart on k3s

I have a bunch of questions which the doco hasn't been able to answer for me (and I've tried heaps of different configs now).

1. What's the pvc for / what's it storing? Does it support RWX (file storage) or does it have to be block?
2. Can I run this helm chart HA? Kind of important, otherwise if I'm pointing all my DNS to pihole and it gets offloaded during a node outage, everything stuffs up at this point (e.g. can't pull images from docker because DNS can't resolve). How do people get around this with a full cluster outage (i.e. do you use a secondary DNS at the router level)?
3. MetalLB - I appear to be having all sorts of issues resolving to the serviceDNS with a MetalLB assigned IP address. Anyone else had issues with this?

I really like the idea of pihole, but in my use case it needs to be HA.

Hi,

1. pihole uses a database to store its configuration. If the pvc is enabled, then it will store it's configuration and stuff there. So it has to be writable. What exactly is mapped to the pvc can be found here.
2. Short answer: HA is not supported. Long answer: It's not because I don't want to, more because pihole itself is not supporting it. Not sure if this changed the last couple of month, but I don't thing so. pihole is using an sqlite database and this does not support multi tenancy to read and write data. Maybe sqlite would support this, but pihole isn't.
   There are two workarounds:
   • You can configure everything in the values.yaml file and deploy the container twice for your HA setup, but then you are not able to use the admin interface and all the charts are meaningless.
   • You can use two pvcs and you can use the admin interface but then you would have to do the changes to each instance of your pihole - and the charts are meaningless as well.
   • Bonus workaround. There is a tool called gravysync and or nebula-sync. I never used it, but if this would be working it could be great to implement it as a feature in this helm chart.
3. I can't help with MetalLB, it is working for me the last couple of years flawlessly.
