Similar to #4051 but not for manual handling. I've been using Smart Lists in Plex recently - these allow you to set criteria for inclusion based on metadata filtering, and sorting at either a volume or episode level. It's quite handy for setting up sometihng like a watch order for parallel series with occasional crossovers / parallel world events - by using the air date you can seamlessly continue between them without having to do anything. e.g. You could tag all the various Law & Order spinoffs with a Law & Order category (or use a name filter) for inclusion, and have sort by airdate.
What differentiates it from a normal reading list is that it's dynamic. As metadata is updated / new episodes are released / additional volumes meet the criteria for inclusion, the list grows. I can see a similar idea being useful for comic reading - want to keep track of the new Ultimate universe stuff? Build a smart list of the volumes involved and have it order by publication date.
Obviously one challenge will be the need for handling missing metadata. In the plex example, I could easily spot out of order episodes (because plex hadn't updated their metadata for some reason) as they were floated to the front of the list. A more robust way of checking a list for "unsortable items" would probably be appreciated - like a side view of issues that are missing required metadata for that smart list so they can be corrected or reviewed by hand.
